Open Workshops and Welcome Party, Whidbey Island, WA

Members of Mawungira Enharira will give a taste of their music through mbira, hosho, dance, and cultural discussion workshops on Whidbey Island
. Spend the weekend learning from and getting to know Mawungira Enharira. Famous for their open rehearsals in their village of Norton, the workshops will give you an opportunity to learn the mbira orchestra style of playing, as well as some explosive hosho moves that will give you a brand new appreciation for the instrument.
Workshops on Saturday, May 3, 1-6 PM Price: $120
On Saturday night, workshop participants will be treated to an all night pungwe honoring the arrival of our friends from Zimbabwe. This will be a party not to be missed, experiencing the music of Mawungira Enharira by the fire.

Mawungira Enharira brings its rousing performance to Seattle, with a special performance honoring the bonds formed with members of Ruzivo and Anzanga on their tours to Zimbabwe. Ruzivo and Anzanga open the show with marimba, then Mawungira closes the night with their energetic blend of mbira music. This venue is as close as we could get to the intimacy of the famed Book Cafe in Harare, home to their acclaimed Friday night gigs, and promises to capture the full spectrum of Mawungira’s vibrant mbira grooves. An after-concert mbira party is still in the works.

One-day camp at the Moeller’s, 14 Comstock Lane, Bonny Doon (near Santa Cruz) CA.
Workshops include singing, storytelling, marimba, drumming, mbira (beginning and intermediate) and hosho (shakers), and guitar if there is interest. We'll come away with something we can all play together!
$20 -$25 for one 1 hr class; $25 - $35 for one 1.5 hr class; $30 - $45 for marimba class; $45 - $65 for all 3 classes (3 -1/2 hours). Sliding scale - please pay as you are able.
Registration in advance; RSVP's required and appreciated as soon as possible.
EVENING: Potluck dinner and panel discussion with the members of Mawungira Enharira.
